The ge258 sofa bed was designed by hans j. Wegner and made by getama and is a characteristic example of danish modern design, combining carefully considered proportions, natural materials and practical functionality. Executed in solid oak with a woven cane backrest, the design has a light architectural appearance despite its generous dimensions.
the solid oak frame displays the restrained construction and attention to detail associated with wegner’s furniture. Straight horizontal lines define the seat and back, while subtly shaped elements and carefully executed joinery soften the overall composition. The warm tone and visible grain of the oak are complemented by the woven cane backrest, which introduces texture and visual lightness.
a defining feature of the ge258 is its convertible construction. The sofa can be transformed into a daybed, making it particularly versatile for use in a living room, study or guest room. This example incorporates getama’s later conversion mechanism, allowing the backrest to be lifted and repositioned. The space behind the backrest also provides practical storage for bedding.
wegner’s long collaboration with getama resulted in a substantial collection of seating furniture in which comfort and craftsmanship were combined with straightforward, functional construction. The ge258 demonstrates this approach particularly clearly: the sofa is visually restrained while incorporating several practical functions without compromising the clarity of the design.
this example retains its vintage oak frame and woven cane backrest and has been fitted with a new mattress cushion with maharam wool upholstery, providing renewed comfort while respecting the original proportions and character of the sofa.
