Portrait of a young gentleman in a dark jacket and shirt with a white scarf around his neck, his hand traditionally hidden in his jacket lapel, a classical pose widespread between the 18th and 19th centuries, made famous especially by depictions of Napoleon Bonaparte but tied to a long tradition of elegance and decorum.
