“The smorgasbord is ready - please enjoy!” Wonderful vintage Per Lysne hand-painted rosemaling smorgasbord platter, dating to approximately the 1930s–1940s. This large wooden platter measures approximately 15 3/4 inches in diameter and is signed “Lysne” on the reverse.
Norwegian-born artist Per Lysne (1880–1947) is recognized as an important figure in the development and revival of rosemaling in America. After settling in Stoughton, Wisconsin, Lysne became particularly known for his colorful hand-painted smorgasbord platters. Historical sources indicate that he developed this style of platter during the 1930s.
This example features a warm cream ground with beautifully painted stylized flowers and foliage in shades of green, blue, red, pink and golden yellow. Decorative Norwegian lettering surrounds the rim and essentially welcomes guests to the prepared smorgasbord/table.
The platter has a hanger attached to the reverse and makes an especially striking piece of wall art.
