The original painted … Read more 19th century Chinese apothecary console, crafted in elm with sixteen functional drawers and a hand-buffed lacquered finish. The original painted front has a rich burnt ocher background with brown accents and small black Chinese characters throughout the drawer fronts. Each drawer is fitted with a brass pull ring, creating a balanced and highly functional façade. At 7.5' long, this striking console with create a strong focal point in any room.
The top and sides are finished in a very dark brown that appears nearly black. The top was constructed as a floating top, an intentional method that allowed the wood to expand and contract with changes in humidity. What may initially appear to be age related separation around the top is therefore part of the original construction.
The painted surface shows crackling, areas of paint loss, old cracks, scuffs, and other wear developed through generations of use. The entire piece has been buffed and hand-lacquered, preserving these layers of age beneath the finished surface. Additional age related cracking and separation are visible along the left side, with further wear to the back and bottoms of the feet, particularly toward the rear.
Restored, strong, stable, and ready to use. All drawers function easily.
