19th century chest of three drawers, crafted in pine with a remarkable original hand-painted folk art finish. Detailed scenes of soldiers on horseback, soldiers carrying old rifles, one with a military drum and other decorative elements all of which embellish the drawer fronts, sides, and top. Gray-blue tones dominate the painted scenes, with touches of red set against a brown faux wood background typical of folk art decoration from the period.
The original painted surface has developed considerable wear and distress through generations of use. Much of the paint along the top has worn away to reveal the natural pine beneath, while scratches, dings, stains, small cracks, gouges, and old nicks are visible throughout. Age related separation between the side planks appears as vertical cracking. A few small holes are visible along the back where knots in the pine fell away at some point in time. Brick red painted bun feet provide an additional colorful accent and are now heavily distressed from age and use.
The extensive wear contributes to the authentic character of the original painted finish and makes this an especially distinctive example of 19th century folk art furniture. Restored, stable, and ready to use.
