Surrounding the portrait, in an oval painted frame, are a number of inscriptions: the name Robert(t) appears at the top left, the title Rex appears at the bottom left, and the abbreviation Scot, which stands for Scotorum, appears at the right; the inscription at the top right is unidentifiable, but would appear to be an acronym.
The portrayed man wears a hat and a jacket adorned with ermine fur, considered the most noble fur reserved for royalty. He wears a golden pendant around his neck, depicting two leaves with the fruit of the thistle, which in heraldry symbolizes Scotland.
The inscription and the pendant therefore refer to a Robert of Scotland, probably of the dynasty that reigned in the fourteenth century.
The portrait was made in the nineteenth-century romantic period, probably inspired by some ancient engraving.
Restored and retouched, it is presented in a stylish frame. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
