Distinguished by its fine materials and balanced proportions, this antique Chinese daybed was masterfully crafted with an eye for decorative detail. Constructed with mortise-and-tenon joinery, the daybed dates to the late 19th century and features a woven rattan top set within a beautiful frame of golden nanmu hardwood.
The apron is traced by a finely beaded edge that continues down each leg and ends in a carved scrollwork flourish. Atop each leg are curved spandrels shaped after the auspicious ruyi, a mythical symbol also known as lingzhi, reishi or the fungus of immortality.
Ideal today as a grand coffee table, this style of low-lying daybed was known as "ta" and was used throughout the courtyard home as a portable surface for reclining, playing games, and gathering for food and drink.
