This richly glazed Chinese vase was shaped by hand in the mid-19th century, originally used to store wine and spirits made from rice and other grains. The wine jar is potted to a gently tapered form and beautifully glazed with neutral earth tones in the manner of Ming-dynasty (1368-1644) cizhou ware.
The tall jar is minimally decorated, painted with brown iron pigments in freeform brushwork atop a creme-white slip. Now aged with a timeworn texture and speckled imperfections, the sculptural wine jar has only become more beautiful with time.
Minor losses to rim. Glaze imperfections throughout.
