Description:
Presenting a magnificent and highly decorative antique Chinese hardwood jewelry box. This rectangular box is crafted from dense, dark hardwood (likely Huanghuali or Hongmu) with a spectacular, natural "Ox-hair" grain (牛毛纹) and a rich, deep, aged patina.
The box is masterfully decorated with traditional Chinese "Baibao" (hundred treasures) inlay work. The lid features a charming scene of two Mandarin ducks swimming among lotus leaves and flowers, accompanied by the Chinese characters "鸳鸯戏水" (Mandarin Ducks Playing in Water), a timeless symbol of marital harmony and fidelity. The inlay utilizes glowing mother-of-pearl and colored semi-precious stones.
The front face is adorned with inlaid figures of stylized deer and floral sprays, and is secured by a substantial, heavy, hand-cast antique bronze lock with an aged, greenish-brown patina. The back and sides feature reinforced bronze mounts (hinges), and the box rests on a carved, stepped base. The wood interior is clean and spacious.
Condition: Excellent antique condition. The box is structurally sound and sturdy. The wood retains its natural, beautiful aged patina with minor surface scratches and wear consistent with age and use. Inlay work is intact and beautifully preserved.
