"Paris Bibliotheque Daniel Filipacchi" Parts I and II. While researching this sale we found some advice - " buy these now these are very rare". And then we got lost in the eye opening mind blowing contents of these sales. Mr. Filipacchi is Chairman emeritus of the French publishing giant, Hachette Filipacchi. He built one of the world's most significant private collections of Surrealist art over nearly five decades alongside his close friend, record producer Nesuhi Ertegun. Their passion for collecting Surrealist art was such a friendly rivalry that the Guggenheim Museum held a joint exhibition of their collections in 1999. Daniel Filippacchi sold his collections through Christie's in Paris in 2004, and these catalogs are indeed a feast for the eyes.

From the Guggenheim exhibit in 1999:
Filipacchi and Ertegun met in New York in 1957 at a jazz event. They discovered a shared passion for both jazz music and Surrealist literature and art. Over the next four decades, they acquired hundreds of pieces, often in a friendly rivalry. Filipacchi focused heavily on core Surrealist works, while Ertegun initially collected Cubism before diving fully into Surrealism. Together, they visited major Surrealist figures like Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst, and Leonora Carrington. Scope: The collection grew to include over 700 pieces, spanning major paintings, sculptures, drawings, collages, photographs, rare books, and unique book bindings. Highlights from Filipacchi's holdings were featured in the "Private Passions" exhibition at the Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris in 1996. The combined collections of Filipacchi and Ertegun formed the landmark Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum exhibition Surrealism: Two Private Eyes, which famously filled the museum from floor to lobby. The exhibition was accompanied by an extensive two-volume catalog documenting the breadth of the works. See less
