Gebrüder Thonet Bentwood Coat Rack, Austria, circa 1905–1910
An exceptional freestanding Gebrüder Thonet bentwood coat rack dating from the early 20th century, circa 1905–1910.
This elegant model perfectly illustrates the craftsmanship for which Thonet was renowned: the steam-bending of beech wood, which produces supple, airy, and almost organic lines.
The upper section features a remarkable crown composed of several large curved arms forming coat hooks, complemented by a second series of smaller hooks with spherical ends. Their particularly fluid design gives the piece a sculptural silhouette, typical of the Belle Époque and early Art Nouveau styles.
The top of the coat rack is organized around an elegant circular ring and a turned central knob.
The long vertical shaft rests on **four bentwood legs**, which are widely spaced to ensure stability while maintaining a sense of visual lightness.
At the bottom, an **umbrella and cane holder** completes the set—a feature typical of coat racks designed for entryways, cafés, hotels, and bourgeois residences at the turn of the century.
The upper crown can be removed from the central shaft, in keeping with the design of many Thonet pieces from this period.
Beneath this upper section, there is a **stamped “10” mark in the wood**. This is likely a former workshop, manufacturing, or assembly number. In the absence of additional documentation, this mark should not be interpreted as a date.
Condition
The coat rack has just undergone a thorough cleaning, which has revealed the full depth and warmth of its mahogany-brown hue.
Restoration was deliberately kept to a minimum to preserve its authenticity.
It thus retains a beautiful antique patina, along with slight signs of wear, small scratches, and superficial marks typical of a piece of furniture over a century old.
These marks are an integral part of the piece’s charm and history.
The quality of the curved woodwork, the complexity of the crown, and the overall balance of the design make this a particularly decorative piece.

Historical Note
Beginning in the mid-19th century, Michael Thonet and later the Gebrüder Thonet company profoundly revolutionized the history of European furniture through the industrial development of steam-bent wood.
This technique made it possible to create furniture that was at once sturdy, lightweight, and extraordinarily fluid in form.
Thonet’s designs became iconic in cafés, hotels, restaurants, and bourgeois interiors throughout Central Europe.
Freestanding coat racks are undoubtedly one of the most spectacular expressions of this technique: the wood ceases to be merely structural and becomes a true decorative element.
On this piece, the large curves of the crown give the furniture an almost architectural presence.
Today, antique Thonet bentwood coat stands are sought after by both collectors of historic furniture and enthusiasts of 20th-century design.
A spectacular decorative piece—both functional and sculptural—ideal for a refined entryway, a Haussmann-style interior, a collector’s home, a private mansion, or a contemporary setting. This piece has an attribution mark,
