The figure is beautifully modeled in full uniform, with a striking deep blue coat, vivid red waistcoat, cream breeches, tall black riding boots, white gloves, and plumed cavalry helmet. A sword hangs alongside the figure, while the relaxed pose of the soldier adjusting his glove gives the sculpture an unusually natural sense of movement and character. Rich hand-painted colors and carefully rendered details throughout the uniform make this an especially attractive display piece.

The integral porcelain base is prominently inscribed “Virginia Light Dragoons 1776,” immediately identifying the historical inspiration. Organized as the Virginia Light Horse, the regiment was transferred into Continental service in November 1776 and became the 1st Continental Light Dragoon Regiment, popularly known as “Bland's Horse.” These mounted soldiers served the Continental Army in important reconnaissance, intelligence, screening, and security roles. George Washington himself ordered Bland's Virginia horsemen to join his army in December 1776.
