Add a highly texture-driven layer of late Victorian history to your curation with this rare, documented 3-piece antique Samuel Lear Majolica garniture set. Made in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, England, between 1877 and 1886, this incredible trio includes a central handled flower basket flanked by a matching pair of small companion mantel vases.
The set is a textbook example of Lear's celebrated "Mossed Ware" technique. To achieve this distinct look, shredded pieces of unglazed clay were applied to the wet earthenware body before firing to build a dense, mossy, or sandpaper-like texture. Striking an organic contrast against the textured, earth-toned mauve bodies are high-gloss, deep oxblood-red applied barbotine roses and foliage. The interior and base wells are finished in a vibrant, rich burgundy tin glaze typical of the studio's aesthetic palate.
While individual, unsigned vases in this style occasionally surface, finding a fully matching 3-piece set bearing the official incised factory signature is an extraordinary opportunity for advanced British art pottery and majolica collectors.
Markings & Authenticity Documentation:
Hand-impressed/incised "LEAR" factory stamp clearly visible on the unglazed bottom rim of the base.
Accompanied by an incised mold/artisan tally cross mark (+) next to the name stamp.
Securely attributed to the historic Samuel Lear Pottery works (Cirk 1877–1886).
