An exceptional, highly preserved 19th-century handwritten Megillat Esther (Scroll of Esther) manuscript written in rich iron-gall ink on natural animal parchment (klaf). This scroll features traditional hand-sewn parchment membrane sections using authentic sinew thread (giddin) and remains attached to its original, hand-turned dark-stained wooden roller (atzei chayim) measuring approximately 14.25 inches in overall height.
Unlike many surviving 19th-century scrolls that suffer from extreme ink oxidation or torn membranes, this piece exhibits crisp, dark calligraphic execution with distinct letter formations and clear crownings (tagin). The manuscript is completely intact, display-ready, and presents a stunning warm golden patina throughout the parchment. A minor natural skin imperfection/hole is present in the initial parchment border section prior to the first text column, typical of handmade antique skins.
Specifications & Attributes
Material: Animal Parchment (Klaf), Ink, Wood (Atzei Chayim), Sinew (Giddin)
Overall Handle Height: Approx. 14.25 inches
Origin & Tradition Analysis
Script Type / Rite: Ashkenazi (Ksav Ashkenaz / Vellish script). Identifiable by the distinct calligraphic structure of the letters Aleph, Shin, and Mem, alongside precise high crowns (tagin) on required letters.
Estimated Country of Origin: Eastern or Central Europe (Poland, Germany, or Austro-Hungarian Empire).
Age: Late 19th Century (c. 1870–1900), confirmed by the turned wood handle style, parchment preparation, and ink patina.
Authenticity Assessment
Handwriting vs. Print: 100% hand-written historic manuscript. Close-up examination shows authentic calligraphic ink elevation, natural stroke weight variations, hand-scored dry-point ruling lines (sirtut), and natural ink feathering into the parchment grain.
Assembly: Membranes are tightly joined along the vertical seams with original hand-stitched sinew thread (giddin).
Materials: True animal skin parchment (klaf) exhibiting natural follicle texture and age-appropriate darkening.
Halachic Status & Value Guidance
Status: Sold as a historical, decorative, and collectible manuscript (non-kosher listing status). A full line-by-line inspection by a certified Sofer (scribe) would be required to certify ritual kosher status for synagogue reading.
Condition Notes: Intact, exceptionally legible, and structurally sound with light handling wear and minor margin oxidation consistent with age.
Reference: Jewish Art and Antiquities, by Chaya Benjamin / Israel Museum Collection. Description Note: "For comparative examples of 19th-century European parchment Megillot written in Ashkenazi STaM script on turned wooden rollers, see similar 19th-century examples documented in standard reference catalogs of European Judaica manuscripts."
Design Significance & Provenance: This 19th-century Hebrew manuscript scroll represents an exquisite interplay of sacred calligraphy and historical craft. Written on fine animal parchment with a rich golden patina, the graphic density of the traditional square Ashkenazi script offers striking visual texture and historic depth.
Aesthetic Appeal: Ideal for high-end interior designers sourcing authentic 19th-century artifacts for library, study, or Judaica collection displays. Mounts beautifully in a custom acrylic presentation case or shadowbox.
Curator’s Note: An exceptionally evocative 19th-century Megillat Esther scroll featuring crisp handwritten Hebrew script on warm, patinated parchment. The sculptural turned-wood handle and historical parchment stitching make it a sophisticated decorative accent for a curated bookshelf, console display, or framed gallery wall.
