Chelsea Brie Maslow Owens (American, Contemporary), large-scale abstract expressionist painting, 2020. Dramatic vertical composition featuring a dense black upper field descending into loosely architectural passages of white, ivory, cream and pale gray. Broad gestural brushwork, layered pigments, visible drips and areas of textured impasto create a stark, atmospheric composition with strong contrasts between light and dark.
The work is characteristic of Owens’ abstract practice emphasizing movement, layering, texture and expressive manipulation of color and form. Owens describes herself as an “action painter, abstract expressionist, and color alchemist.” After studying at the Corcoran School of Art, University of Massachusetts Amherst and Academy of Art University in San Francisco, Owens lived and exhibited in Europe before establishing a studio in Santa Barbara, California. Her exhibition history includes the Carrousel du Louvre in Paris, SCOPE Art Fair, Sullivan Goss Gallery in Santa Barbara, and numerous California exhibitions.
