This is an exquisite vintage Chinese Zitan (Rosewood) box, featuring a hinged lid decorated with fine Mother-of-Pearl (MOP) inlay.
The lid depicts a classic, elegant "Bird and Flower" scene. It features a pierced scholar's rock (Taihu stone), a blooming plum blossom branch, and two delicate birds in flight. The corners are accented with stylized gold-colored ruyi clouds, and the center features a yellow flower. The iridescent white shell contrasts brilliantly against the deep, dark reddish-purple wood.
The wood itself is dense, showing fine "ox-hair" grain and a gorgeous, aged patina. The box stands on classic, small carved feet.
This generously sized box (14 inches wide) is incredibly versatile. It is the perfect size for storing documents, letters, jewelry, tea, or small treasures.
