This is a superb vintage Chinese carving of Guanyin (Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara), meticulously hand-carved from premium Boxwood (Huangyangmu).
The Bodhisattva is depicted in the iconic "Water-Moon" Guanyin posture, known as "Royal Ease" (one knee raised, the other leg down). She holds a string of prayer beads (Mala) in one hand, her expression serene and downcast.
The most extraordinary feature of this piece is the magnificent openwork/pierced carved halo behind the figure, depicting elaborate scrollwork and flame motifs. The figure rests upon a beautifully textured, rockery-style base with swirling clouds.
Despite its intricate details, the sculpture is remarkably compact and lightweight. It is a perfect addition to a meditation space, a scholar's desk, or a display cabinet. This is a timeless piece of Buddhist art that brings peace and tranquility to any interior setting.
