The composition was designed by the celebrated French flower painter Jean-Louis Prévost and engraved by Louis-Charles Ruotte for Prévost's important botanical work "Collection des Fleurs et des Fruits, peints d'après nature," published by Vilquin in Paris in 1805. Executed as a stipple engraving printed in colours and finished by hand, the plate demonstrates the sophisticated colour-printing techniques employed in French botanical illustration at the beginning of the 19th century. The flowers are arranged as a loose bouquet against a plain background, allowing the remarkable forms and variegated colouring of the carnations to dominate the composition. Prévost's "Collection des Fleurs et des Fruits" comprised 48 plates and was conceived not only as a botanical work but also as a source of inspiration for artists and designers working in porcelain, textiles, embroidery and other decorative arts. Today it is regarded as one of the outstanding French flower books of the early 19th century.
