The title refers to the Puszta, the vast Hungarian steppe that fascinated many nineteenth-century European artists and writers as a landscape of tradition and cultural identity. Rather than emphasizing exoticism, Rops presents an intimate, almost documentary vision of rural life, where the anonymous female figure becomes a timeless symbol of maternity, endurance, and solitude. The print is struck on fine cream-colored paper with full margins. It exhibits clear, expressive line work and rich ink coverage, remaining strong across the complex cross-hatching in the landscape. The sheet shows uniform, characteristic age-toning across the broad margins, with minor handling creases at the leftmost edge, entirely outside the image area. The lower right margin retains its contemporary hand-written reference notations in pencil. Unrestored and exceptionally preserved. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker.
