Provençal pottery - a glazed terracotta jug known as a "conscience" jug, dating from the 19th century. This rare model features six handles that were used to secure the jug with ropes, particularly useful when transported by donkey. Historically rooted in Provence, this folk art pottery was originally used by mendicant friars to proselytize or collect olive oil from the local people for the poor. Each person gave "according to their conscience," hence the name of the jug.
In excellent condition considering its age.
