A commanding early Georgian Scottish portrait combining distinguished military history with considerable decorative presence.

Attributed to William Aikman (1682–1731), the portrait depicts Sir James Campbell of Lawers and Rowallan, probably around 1720 during his period as Colonel of the Scots Greys.

The National Galleries of Scotland holds an accepted William Aikman portrait of the same sitter, while extensive Campbell-family patronage is documented within Aikman's portrait practice.

Campbell later became Lieutenant-General, Governor of Edinburgh Castle and Knight of the Bath. He was mortally wounded during the Fontenoy campaign in 1745.

An older frame plaque names William Aikman and an apparent historic “Wm Aikman” attribution survives verso.

Sloane Street Auctions, London, independently catalogued the painting as Attributed to William Aikman in July 2024.
