A beautiful English Wedgwood majolica serving dish, naturalistically modeled in the form of a large scallop shell and decorated with a richly mottled tortoiseshell glaze.
The dramatic glaze combines deep emerald and moss greens with amber, ochre and warm brown, creating the distinctive tortoiseshell effect for which Wedgwood majolica of this period is known. The deeply molded ribs follow the natural contours of a shell, terminating at one end in a wonderfully modeled curled hinge.
This naturalistic shell form belongs to Wedgwood's Aesthetic Movement production.
