Norstad was a known Norwegian-American mid-century architect celebrated for his outstanding hand-thrown stoneware and architectural ceramics. Born in New York, Norstad primarily worked in Northern California in the Marin County and East Bay areas. He cited Japanese Mingei (folk art) traditions, as well as the works of ceramicist/ sculptor Peter Voulkos and potter Bernard Leach as foundational inspiration in his career. That, and his own Scandinavian mid 20th century heritage, influenced his own form.
