Published by John Trumbull in New York on January 1, 1808, this period engraving was executed by James Mitan and printed by Andrew Maverick. The dramatic composition depicts the death of General Joseph Warren during the Battle of Bunker Hill, surrounded by British and American troops in one of the most recognizable images of the American Revolution. The National Archives also identifies the work as an 1808 engraving after Trumbull’s painting.

The lower margin retains its wonderful original engraved inscriptions, including:

Presented beneath glass in a handsome dark wood frame with gilt detailing and a wide cream mat. The warm toning and scattered foxing are consistent with age and give the piece tremendous period character.
