The composition depicts a lively waterfront community with fishermen and figures gathered among tall fishing nets and a small green structure, while sailboats, distant buildings and an atmospheric harbor skyline extend across the background.
Executed in a loose, expressive modernist manner, the work combines elongated architectural and nautical forms with small, colorful figures and a subdued palette of blue-gray, olive green, cream and earthy brown.
The painting is presented in its original-style wide, light-toned wood frame. Of particular interest is the surviving reverse label from Koltnow Gallery, Little Frame Shop, 192 West 4th Street, New York, providing period New York gallery/framing provenance.
Research documents an American artist named Hazel Ware, 1907–1978, who worked professionally in Manhattan and was active as both an artist and textile designer. Attribution should nevertheless remain “signed Hazel Ware” unless independently authenticated. See less
