A hand-knotted rug woven in Afghanistan on a charcoal grey ground, planted with a grove of cypress and flowering trees in sage, rose, gold, crimson, teal and ivory, with small deer, birds, ducks and animals scattered between them. Hand-spun wool on a cotton foundation, knotted by hand.
Six tall cypresses stand down the field, taller than everything around them. In the garden designs of Persia and Central Asia the cypress is the tree of eternal life — evergreen, never bare, the one tree that does not die back — and it is drawn here at full height with a flowering crown, flanked by smaller almond and pomegranate trees in blossom.
The grey ground carries a strong horizontal abrash, the natural banding that comes from hand-spun yarn dyed in small batches, and it gives the field a depth and movement that a flat ground cannot. Between the trees the weaver has set small creatures throughout — grazing deer, ducks, birds on branches, tiny dogs — each one drawn slightly differently, so the rug rewards looking at closely. There is no border; the grove simply runs to the edges, closing in the original hand-tied fringe with coloured accents.
Hand-knotted with a full even pile throughout, no wear, no repairs, no odour. Selvedges and fringes are intact and original.
Measuring 67 by 91 inches, it suits a dining table for four, a bedroom under a queen bed, a study, or a seating area within a larger room. The charcoal ground is unusual and useful — it grounds a pale room the way a dark rug should, while the rose and sage keep it warm rather than severe. It works in transitional, contemporary, bohemian and modern farmhouse interiors.
