Impressive large-scale mid-20th-century European woven Jacquard tapestry depicting an elegant traditional hunting scene in the manner of historic French Aubusson and Flemish tapestries.
The expansive pastoral composition features mounted hunters, attendants, hunting dogs, mature trees, rolling countryside, architectural elements and a distant hilltop structure. The finely detailed scene is woven in a restrained palette of muted olive green, sage, cream, beige, brown and burgundy, giving the tapestry the beautifully aged appearance sought after in traditional European interiors.
This is a woven textile rather than a printed image. Examination of the reverse reveals the Jacquard construction and surviving original manufacturer's identification label marked “Dis. 1219 / Mis. 140 x 270.” The indicated dimensions correspond to approximately 55 x 106 inches.
The tapestry is mounted within an elaborate carved and molded wood frame with repeating classical foliage decoration. Its unusually generous scale makes it especially well suited for a large living room, library, dining room, entry hall, staircase landing, hotel, country house or other substantial architectural space.
The composition draws directly from the grand European tradition of aristocratic hunting and verdure tapestries produced in France and Flanders during earlier centuries. This example appears to be a mid-20th-century Jacquard interpretation of that tradition, rather than an early handwoven Aubusson tapestry.
The tapestry has been in the same family collection for many decades and was displayed in the family's earlier home. The surviving manufacturer's label and untouched reverse provide additional evidence of its age and construction.
A dramatic decorative textile with considerable presence and an exceptionally attractive Old World character.

The textile displays expected age-related wear, including some fading, minor discoloration and localized wear visible upon close inspection. There is fraying and loose threading along portions of the reverse edges where the tapestry is attached to its support. These areas are primarily visible from the back and do not substantially detract from the presentation when displayed. The wood frame shows expected age-related surface wear, small marks and variations to the finish. The tapestry presents beautifully when hung. Please review all photographs closely, particularly photographs of the reverse, original label, edges and mounting, as they form an important part of the condition description. less
