Striking pair of large Chinese-style blue and white porcelain temple or ginger jars, each approximately 20 inches tall and displaying a richly decorative cobalt-blue and white palette.
The baluster-form vessels are extensively decorated with scrolling floral and foliate motifs surrounding large figural medallions. Particularly appealing are the sculptural applied animal-mask mounts positioned around the shoulders, giving the jars additional dimension and architectural presence. Each vessel is completed by a broad domed removable cover decorated en suite and surmounted by a whimsical modeled animal finial.
The combination of densely worked cobalt decoration, sculptural details and generous proportions gives this pair considerable visual impact while retaining the versatility that has made blue-and-white porcelain a perennial element of sophisticated interiors.
At approximately 20 inches high, these jars are particularly well scaled for interior design applications. Display them together on a substantial console, commode or library table for symmetry, or separate them across a room to establish visual continuity. They would also work beautifully flanking a fireplace, positioned on pedestals in an entry hall, or incorporated into a layered collection of Asian ceramics.
Their classic blue-and-white coloration lends itself equally well to traditional, Chinoiserie, Hollywood Regency, Grand Millennial, coastal, transitional and contemporary interiors, providing pattern and color without overwhelming surrounding furnishings.
The jars appear to be unmarked. We therefore make no attribution to a particular Chinese dynasty, workshop or period.
Measurements:
Approximately 20 in. total height × 10 in. diameter each.
Good overall condition. The porcelain retains a rich blue-and-white glazed surface with minor irregularities and variations inherent to the hand-manufacturing and firing process. One jar exhibits a visible firing line/manufacturing separation beneath the glaze, which occurred during production and is not the result of subsequent damage. Minor surface wear and imperfections consistent with age and manufacture. Please refer to the detailed photographs.
