Downs depicts an exuberant arrangement overflowing from a substantial terracotta planter, with roses and assorted garden flowers rendered in saturated shades of pink, coral, red, yellow, violet, blue and white. Dense green foliage provides depth and contrast against a soft pale-blue background.
The painting is particularly appealing for its abundant, almost maximalist floral composition. Downs employs loose, expressive brushwork with areas of heavier textural paint, giving individual blossoms dimension while maintaining the spontaneous character associated with his work.
Signed “F. Downs” at the lower right.
Presented unframed on its original stretched canvas, allowing the painting to work equally well as-is or placed in a contemporary float frame. The generous 30-inch width gives the work substantial wall presence.
