This colorful composition depicts a lush collection of flowering plants arranged in terracotta pots against a weathered garden wall and trellis. Vibrant reds, yellows, purples and greens contrast beautifully with the warm terra-cotta foreground, creating the relaxed tropical garden atmosphere associated with South Florida and Palm Beach living.
Executed with expressive, textural brushwork, the painting has a wonderfully personal folk-impressionist quality. It is clearly signed “F. Downs” at the lower right.
Downs had deep roots in Palm Beach County. After retiring from his career in construction, he devoted himself to painting, exhibited his work in local galleries and maintained a studio at Gallery One in Lake Park. Presented in a substantial vintage gilt wood frame with linen liner. The warm gold frame complements the garden palette beautifully and gives the relatively intimate painting considerably more presence on the wall. See less
