This beautiful vintage plate is a classic piece of Italian trompe l'oeil (trick of the eye) majolica pottery. The three-dimensional, realistically sculpted almond nuts depicted resting on the plate surface are almonds in their shells. Handcrafted in Italy by the legendary Este Ceramiche, this style of playful tableware dates back to the 18th century and is celebrated for mimicking realistic still-life scenes. Este Ceramiche's highly collectable trompe l'oeil pieces have famously been produced for luxury retailers like Tiffany & Co. and Bergdorf Goodman. The hand-painted green floral design and scalloped edges perfectly frame the realistic ceramic nut cluster.
