An exceptional example of Italian modern design, this Cavalletto dining table was designed in 1947 by Luigi Caccia Dominioni for Azucena, the influential Milanese design company he co-founded with Ignazio Gardella, Corrado Corradi Dell’Acqua, and others.

The Cavalletto is distinguished by its remarkably elegant and architectural construction. A large oval smoked gray glass top appears to float above a finely articulated steel trestle base composed of angled supports, slender horizontal rails, and intersecting diagonal cross-bracing. The transparency of the glass allows the geometry of the structure to remain fully visible, making the base an integral visual element of the table rather than simply a support.

Caccia Dominioni’s design balances lightness and strength with exceptional refinement. The slender metal framework creates an open, almost weightless appearance, while the intersecting lines beneath the top introduce a subtle sense of movement and graphic rhythm. The design is highly characteristic of postwar Italian modernism, where precision engineering, elegant proportions, and restrained use of materials were combined to create furniture that feels both functional and sculptural.
