The restrained architectural form is … Read more A handsome French Directoire period fruitwood commode dating to the late 18th century, circa 1790–1800. The restrained architectural form is characteristic of the Directoire period, bridging the refinement of Louis XVI design with the cleaner lines that would develop under the Empire.

The commode features three drawers, with the upper drawer visually divided into three framed panels, creating the appearance of smaller drawers. Each drawer front is outlined with subtle brass trim and fitted with geometric brass pulls and oval escutcheons. Fluted corner stiles and slender tapered legs lend the case a particularly elegant, neoclassical profile.

The warm fruitwood has developed a rich, beautifully varied surface with visible grain, mellow color and the marks of more than two centuries of use. Areas of wear, old repairs and variations to the surface contribute to its authentic character and are consistent with age.
