Oil on canvas. At the centre of the scene, set outdoors in a suburb of the city, a figure standing on a stage or a raised platform is offering a handkerchief to someone in the small crowd watching him from below, while next to him is a goat and behind him a man observes and waits: it is therefore a barker who is proposing and extolling someone else's goods, the goat in this case. On the right, a tall, slender column surmounted by a statue stands out, a meeting point in daily city life, already very active from the early hours of the day, as the pink sky on the right suggests. Similar subjects to this are found in the work of Giovanni Michele Graneri (1708 -1778), a Turin painter who renewed the seventeenth-century tradition of the Bamboccianti in genre scenes of popular life, of the market rather than of the tavern. The painting is on the first canvas, with patches on the back. It is presented in a late 19th-early 20th-century frame. This piece is attributed to the mentioned designer/maker. It has no attribution mark and no
official proof of authenticity,
however it is well documented in design history. I take full responsibility for any authenticity
issues arising from misattribution
