OGUI
“Village by the River,” 1929
A wonderfully atmospheric original European landscape dated 1929, depicting a quiet village gathered around an old stone bridge and a tall church tower.
The river becomes the true heart of the composition, loosely reflecting the trees, bridge, and surrounding architecture. Beyond it, a handful of small figures animate the village square among tiled-roof houses and mature trees.
The artist combines carefully observed architecture with a far freer treatment of water and vegetation. Saturated turquoise, deep blue, green, and soft gray give the composition an especially fresh and appealing palette.
The foreground becomes almost abstract in places, with spontaneous washes and energetic drawn marks contrasting beautifully with the more structured church tower and buildings beyond.
The result has a distinctly modern character characteristic of European works on paper from the late 1920s.
Watercolor and gouache with pencil and crayon accents on board.
Signed “OGUI” and dated “1929” lower right.
