A handwoven Maimana kilim from northern Afghanistan, worked in brick red, chocolate brown, apricot, teal and ivory. Maimana, in Faryab province, is the flatweave heart of the country, and this is a mellower palette than the region's brightest work — warm rather than electric.
The weave is flat and reversible, hand-spun wool with no pile, and the colour holds well on the reverse. The tones shift gently across the field from abrash, the natural variation between batches of hand-spun yarn.
The field runs on a dark chocolate ground, filled with a lattice of interlocking hooked keys in apricot and brick that steps down the length of the rug, holding a column of stepped diamond medallions in navy, teal, apricot and white. What lifts the design is the frame: a broad ivory band carrying rows of hooked key motifs in brick, orange, teal and navy, set between fine sawtooth guards, which opens the composition up rather than crowding it. Each end closes in a banded skirt of orange, teal, blue and brown stripes above the original ivory fringe.
The kilim is flat woven with no pile, so there is no pile wear. The weave is even across the field, the selvedges and end finishes are intact, and the fringe is original with light wear at the tips. Clean and odour free.
Measuring 75 by 114 inches, this is a standard room size that will hold a living room seating group with the front legs of the furniture on the rug, or a dining table for six. The ivory ground in the border keeps the pattern from dominating, which makes it an easier rug to build a room around than most kilims of this strength, and it works in bohemian, eclectic, southwestern and traditional interiors.
