This is a superb vintage Chinese carving of Guanyin (Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara), exquisitely hand-carved from fine-grained Boxwood (Huangyangmu).
The figure is depicted in a relaxed "Royal Ease" posture, seated on a beautifully textured rockery base with swirling waves and clouds, representing the Water-Moon Guanyin. She has a serene facial expression, intricate flowing robes, and a high chignon with a small Buddha figure.
The wood has a rich, warm, reddish-brown tone with a beautiful polished patina that catches the light wonderfully. As a small-scale sculpture (5.5 inches tall), it is perfect for a meditation space, a desk, a curio cabinet, or as a thoughtful collectible gift. This is a superb example of traditional Chinese woodcraft.
