Pair of 123 lounge chairs designed by Verner Panton and manufactured by Fritz Hansen in Denmark 1973. These sculptural and iconic lounge chairs belong to Verner Panton’s celebrated 123 series, one of his most sophisticated modular furniture systems of the 1970s. Conceived as a unified family of seating elements, the 123 system was built around the idea that furniture could adapt to the needs of its user through modularity, variation and sculptural continuity. Panton envisioned the series as a fluid sequence of forms, chairs, loungers, dining chairs, bar stools and sofas, all based on the same elegant S shaped silhouette and supported by a swivel pedestal base. Within this system, clients could choose from different heights, upholstery types, fabrics, colors and the option of arms or armless configurations, making every piece highly customizable. This pair represents the high back lounge version with arms, one of the most desirable and uncommon variations in the series. The original sand colored tufted upholstery is still in very good condition, showing only minor signs of age, and retains the soft, quilted relief that gives these chairs their distinctive tactility. The foam remains smooth and firm, ensuring excellent comfort, something especially appreciated in this high model, which is suitable even for taller sitters. The brown painted aluminum bases give the chairs a grounded presence and reflect the warm earth tones that defined Scandinavian interiors of the early seventies. Fully original examples of the 123 series are increasingly rare, and the combination of high backs, armrests, original tufted fabric and untouched condition makes this pair particularly special. Their sculptural silhouettes are pure Panton, organic yet controlled, futuristic yet inviting. Beyond their visual impact, these chairs offer superb comfort, gentle movement through the swivel base and a generous, enveloping seating experience.
