A splendid original 1960s set comprising a hexagonal rosewood table, designed by Ignazio Gardella for Azucena, and six Danish chairs.
The table features a metal frame with brass legs and measures 100 cm from side to side, or 120 cm from edge to edge, with a distinctive wedge-shaped finish.
This exceptional dining set, attributed to the celebrated Italian architect and designer Ignazio Gardella (1905-1999) for the renowned Milanese brand Azucena, represents the pinnacle of mid-century Italian aesthetics. The set, comprising a large revolving table and six matching chairs, is a tangible testament to the fusion of functional engineering and refined craftsmanship.
The centerpiece of the ensemble is the revolving table, a masterpiece of inlay and engineering. The top features a striking radial inlaid "sunburst" pattern, crafted from various types of fine wood. This technique creates a hypnotic and dynamic optical effect that draws attention to the center. The functional highlight, typical of Gardella's genius, lies in the tabletop's rotating mechanism, transforming the table into a versatile and interactive conversation and service hub.
The radial tabletop rests on a solid and distinctive black lacquered metal column base, which branches into four sturdy legs with clean geometric shapes. While providing exceptional stability, this base maintains a slender and airy silhouette. The transition between the warmth of the inlaid wood and the modernity of the black metal creates a sophisticated and elegant contrast.
Completing the table are six matching chairs, also attributed to Gardella. The chairs feature a dark wood frame, arched backs, and padded seats upholstered in dark leather, echoing the deep hues of the tabletop and metal base. The curvature of the backrest is not only an aesthetic detail, but is designed to offer optimal comfort and ergonomic posture.
Every element of this set reflects Gardella's obsessive attention to detail and quality materials. The combination of bold, innovative design with traditional Italian craftsmanship makes this set not just a piece of furniture, but a functional work of art, perfect for the most discerning and collectible interiors of 20th-century design. This set represents a rare opportunity to own an iconic piece of Italian design history.
Very good condition, as shown in photos, with some obvious signs of age; only one chair has been excellently restored. I have official proof of authenticity such as vintage catalogs,
designer records,
or other literature sources and take full responsibility for any authenticity issues arising
