A beautifully aged complete three-volume antique set of The Poems of Elizabeth Barrett Browning, published in New York by James Miller, 647 Broadway, in 1874.
The title pages identify the work as “Complete in Three Volumes,” corrected by the last London edition, with an introductory essay by H. T. Tuckerman. All three volumes are present: Volumes I, II and III.
More than 150 years old, the books retain wonderful authentic Victorian character. Each volume features an elaborately gilt-tooled leather spine with contrasting red title panels reading “Mrs. Browning’s Poems” and dark green volume-number panels. Particularly attractive are the surviving marbled page edges, which display rich muted tones of burgundy, ochre, blue and brown and give the set exceptional visual interest when displayed horizontally or vertically.
The interiors include decorative typographic and engraved embellishments as well as a portrait of Elizabeth Barrett Browning. An early 1874 handwritten ownership inscription and literary notation remain in one volume, adding another appealing layer of period history and evidence of the books’ long life.
Elizabeth Barrett Browning (1806–1861) was one of the most important and widely read poets of the Victorian era. This complete 1874 American edition therefore offers genuine literary and antiquarian interest in addition to its considerable decorative presence.
