This occupation, of unique old objects, never ceases to surprise and amaze. When you just thought you can sit back and relax for a bit, an object comes your way that makes you shoot right back up. And it's in a handful of times a year you come across an object that exceed ones' own expectation; and the next day it grows on you, and by the third day you're completely ravished. Case in point is this stupendous large wood with polychrome horse head, which we believe to be a trade sign from an equestrian facility, or stable. A late 19th Century creation that is a true statement piece. This marvelous 26 inch wide beauty is made of solid wood and adorned by metal harness and detailed with hand painted eyes and mouth. The aged red & white has only gotten more lovely with time. And the caramelized/crusty brown paint of the body is something only time can naturally develop. Now, the bottom stand is obviously newer but the neck still obtains the original metal sides that was used to secure it down. We can go on and on but the piece speaks for itself.
The last couple of things we like to say is to 1) note the numero numeral on the one side with the number thirteen carved into it. And 2) though the source told us this was a trade sign, we do want to stay open to the possibility that this could have also come from a carnival or fairground.
This horse head came from a Rhode Island estate.
