This Neoclassical … Read more An elegant French Neoclassical carved giltwood demi-lune console table, with exceptional marble top, from the early 19th century. This Neoclassical period table from France features a striking half-round marble top of unusual coloration, resting atop a rounded apron with curved frieze decorated with a finely carved repeating fluted arcade motif, bordered by twisted ribbon molding and a delicate gadrooned band. The table is presented upon six round, tapering, fluted legs, arranged across the curved front and rear corners and terminating into turned peg feet. Small carved volute brackets beneath the apron support the legs at top, with beautifully carved stretcher bars at lower underside converging at a central circular platform supporting an elaborately carved and gilded lyre-form urn finial, flanked by scrolling acanthus foliage and cascading floral garlands. The unique amber-toned marble deserves special attention with its exceptionally decorative palette of golden ochre and reddish-purple (merlot) veining. The stone appears consistent with one of the highly prized French or Mediterranean brecciated marbles favored for important decorative furnishings, imparting both rarity and visual drama. The original gilt and painting finishes have mellowed nicely with age, producing a warm, attractive patina throughout.
