Presenting a beautiful pair of antique chromolithographs featuring exquisitely detailed Asian butterfly specimens. These plates were published between 1909 and 1915 as part of the monumental entomological work "Die Gross-Schmetterlinge der Erde" (The Macrolepidoptera of the World) by renowned German lepidopterist Adalbert Seitz (1860–1938).
Considered one of the most comprehensive visual records of Lepidoptera ever produced, Seitz's landmark series is celebrated for its scientific accuracy and delicate coloration. The plates in this set focus on two distinct taxonomic groups within the Pieridae family. The first plate highlights species within the Pieris and Appias classifications, known for their subtle yet distinctive wing patterns. The second plate meticulously details species from the Pieris and Leucochloe groups, exhibiting beautiful morphological traits and delicate aesthetic refinement.
Together, these chromolithographs exemplify the artistic and scientific excellence of early 20th-century natural history illustration. Originally printed in Germany, the rich inks and varied wing patterns make these plates highly collectible for entomology enthusiasts, antiquarian book collectors, and interior designers alike.
