Hand-thrown in an appealing utilitarian form with an applied handle, pronounced pouring spout, fitted lid and rounded knob. The surface features a striking two-tone glaze, transitioning from warm tan and ochre across the lower body to a richly mottled olive green and deep brown across the shoulder, neck, handle and spout.

C.C. Cole Pottery was an important 20th-century North Carolina pottery operation associated with Charles Clifton “C.C.” Cole and members of the extended Cole pottery family. C.C.’s children Thurston Cole and Dorothy Cole Auman were among the potters who worked in the shop. The pottery became particularly well known for its prolific production and colorful glaze treatments during the mid-20th century.

This example is unsigned, and the individual potter cannot be established. It is therefore conservatively offered as attributed to C.C. Cole Pottery rather than definitively assigned to Thurston Cole or Dorothy Cole Auman.

An appealing example of North Carolina’s long studio and folk-pottery tradition, equally suited to a pottery collection or as a decorative accent. See less
