Originally crafted in the 1970s by St. John's Table Co. of Cadillac, Michigan, this traditional hutch has been completely reimagined as a one-of-a-kind work of functional art.
I was drawn to the substantial craftsmanship and classic lines of the original piece, but wanted to give it a personality all its own. The hutch was finished in a soft, dusty green, creating a beautifully muted backdrop for the hand-painted details that bring the piece to life.
Every decorative element was painted by hand, adding an artistic quality and sense of movement while highlighting the architectural details of the cabinet. I chose to retain the original hardware, painting it as part of the overall design rather than replacing it. Even the hinges were transformed, hand-painted to resemble aged, hand-forged iron, giving the cabinet an old-world character.
The result is a piece that bridges its 1970s American furniture heritage with an entirely new artistic identity. It has the presence of a traditional china cabinet, but the personality of a piece created for someone who doesn't want ordinary furniture.
Perfect for displaying china, collected objects, books, art or treasured pieces, it offers generous storage while making a statement wherever it lives.
One-of-a-kind. Hand-painted and reimagined by Painted Designs by Sondra.
