Description:
Presenting a magnificent and incredibly heavy (4.3kg) Chinese bronze sculpture of Zhenwu (True Warrior), also known as Xuanwu, the revered Daoist deity of the North, exorcism, and protection.
This statue is richly decorated with vivid polychrome painting (彩绘) and gold leaf accents. The deity is depicted seated majestically in full ceremonial armor. His face is painted with a golden complexion, serene eyes, and a prominent black beard, radiating authority. He wears a red scarf around his neck and has flowing blue and green celestial ribbons (pibos) that wrap around his body, adding a dynamic sense of movement. His hands rest on his lap, holding a sword. At his feet, he is shown triumphantly treading on the iconic tortoise and snake (玄武), his sacred animal symbols. He sits upon a sculpted, rocky mountainous base.
The back of the statue features a rectangular recessed panel with a raised inscription reading "大明永樂年製" (Made in the Great Ming Yongle Period), a traditional reverence mark. The bronze base has a natural, aged patina.
Condition: Excellent condition. The polychrome paint and gilding are well-preserved and vibrant. The bronze is solid, heavy, and structurally sound. Minor surface wear, small paint flakes, and natural oxidation are consistent with age and display. Please refer to all photos for exact details.
