Robert Francis Williams (1881-1972)
Twentieth Century American Impressionist. He was born in Manhattan in 1881. When Williams showed an interest in drawing as a child, his father encouraged his talent. And in 1899, he sent Williams to study with noted American painter and teacher William Merritt Chase at The New York School of Art. Early in his career, Williams' work as a student was exhibited with Academicians at the National School of Design and his landscape titled The Frozen Brook won award in 1904, giving him his first success. After getting married in 1911, he elected to earn his living as a color etcher for a Manhattan newspaper. Along with his etching work, the artist painted and was also an art instructor. Robert F. Williams is best known for his plein air paintings of the American landscape.
