Exceptional Large 1989 Wood Inlay Flying Geese Wall Art by C. Pruitt – Crafted from 19th-Century Tolchester, MD Salvaged Wood
This is a magnificent, deeply historic piece of regional Chesapeake Bay Folk Art. The reverse side features an original handwritten inscription detailing its exceptional structural origin and artist signature:
"The lath used was salvaged during renovation of a 19th Century home, located near Tolchester, MD..." — Hand-Signed: C. Pruitt (1989)
Tolchester Beach on Maryland's Eastern Shore is legendary for its late-1800s Victorian steamship and resort era. Crafted by regional artisan C. Pruitt using authentic upcycled materials, this stunning statement artwork brings a tangible piece of Maryland history directly into your home.
This is an awesome, breathtaking work of rustic art wood with minimal paint. The old wooden slats and frame have marks from being recycled and repurposed. The geese and moon are so graciously detailed and aligned to a tee on each vertical slat.
Artistry & Craftsmanship:
This massive artwork is meticulously constructed using wood inlay (marquetry/intarsia) techniques. The composition utilizes the varied, natural, and rich aged tones of the antique salvaged wooden slats to form a breathtaking winter sky, while the flying geese and moon are beautifully aligned across the individual vertical panels. It features subtle, minimalist paint detailing that highlights rather than hides the wood's historic soul.
Impressive Substantial Scale: Measures a large 32 3/4” wide by 25” high with a bold 1 3/4” deep profile that commands attention as a primary focal piece on any wall.
Excellent vintage condition. The woodwork is beautiful with no major deep gouges or structural warping. Ready to hang with heavy-duty hanging wire already installed on the reverse. Please view all high resolution photographs to see the materials, detail, artistry and condition as they are a large part of the description.
A premier acquisition for collectors of Americana, Maryland history buffs, waterfowl art enthusiasts, or anyone decorating a Chesapeake lodge, modern farmhouse, or rustic gallery wall.
Designers and boutique decorators shop these platforms specifically for large focal art with historical significance. The "19th-century Tolchester lath" story justifies every bit of this premium price point.
Artistry, Grand Scale & Presence:
Unlike the common, small accent pictures typically found on the secondary market, this is a massive, true statement-sized gallery piece. Measuring an impressive 32 3/4” wide by 25” high with a thick, bold 1 3/4” profile, this artwork has a substantial physical weight and a striking wall-commanding presence perfect for mounting over a fireplace mantle, a large sofa, or as the anchor of a rustic gallery wall.
The master woodwork is meticulously executed using advanced inlay (marquetry/intarsia) techniques. The artist, C. Pruitt, beautifully utilized the varied, natural, and rich aged tones of the authentic 19th-century salvaged wooden slats to construct a breathtaking winter landscape. The flying geese and moon are seamlessly aligned across the individual vertical panels, creating incredible multi-dimensional depth. It features subtle, minimalist paint detailing that accentuates rather than hides the wood's historic texture and grain.
Material: Historic 19th-Century Salvaged Wood Lath Slats, Mixed Natural Woods
Style: Chesapeake Bay Folk Art, Waterfowl Americana, Rustic Cabin, Cottagecore Country, Maryland Americana, Charlie Pruitt Wood, Historic Salvage Art, Tolchester MD History, Large Waterfowl Inlay, Oversized Geese Art, Antique Wood Lath Picture, Farmhouse Mantle Decor, Vintage 1989 Wood Mosaic.
A similar but MUCH smaller version of this was sold on Chairish and it measured only 18” x 11.5” (roughly 200 square inches). At 32.75” x 25” (over 800 square inches), this piece is actually four times the total surface area. It is a true oversized mantle or sofa piece, whereas the other one was just a small accent picture.
In the art and antiques world, jumping from an accent size to a massive statement piece by a recognized regional artist (C. Pruitt) with historical provenance multiplies the value significantly.
Since shipping this VERY heavy oversized 33" solid wood piece will cost at least $75–$125 in freight/postage a local collector buyer from the Maryland/Chesapeake region who drives to pick it up can save significantly.
