Against a captivating tobacco-brown background, the hand-painted silk unfolds a delicately naturalistic garden: irises by the water's edge, blooming peonies, cherry blossoms, and birds in flight echo each other from panel to panel in a composition of rare poetry. The scalloped top in cream-lacquered wood, the gilt brocade borders, and the intricately crafted hinges attest to the care taken in its creation.

The equally refined reverse side features a printed fabric—using the tsutsugaki or katazome technique—with chrysanthemum and wave motifs on a deep brown background. A truly double-sided piece.
