A superb example of English Arts & Crafts silversmithing, this antique hammered sterling silver trophy cup combines exceptional craftsmanship, sporting history, and a wonderfully sculptural presence. The substantial solid silver cup is beautifully hand-hammered throughout, giving the surface a rich, tactile character that catches and reflects the light. Three gracefully formed handles complete the distinctive design, creating a handsome trophy that is equally impressive viewed from any angle.
The quality is immediately apparent in its weight and construction. The sterling silver cup alone weighs an impressive 300 grams and is fully hallmarked for England. It is removable from its original-style ebonized wood plinth, allowing the silver to be displayed either independently or as a traditional presentation trophy.
Adding considerably to its historical appeal is the beautifully engraved presentation inscription across the front of the cup:
“Wallasey Golf Club
St. Andrews Meeting
First Handicap Prize
Won by
C. B. Shepherd
22nd November 1925”
The cup measures approximately 4.25 inches high, 6 inches wide, and 5.75 inches deep. The ebonized wood base adds approximately 2 inches to the overall height, giving the piece considerable presence when displayed. Good antique condition with light signs of wear and handling. The trophy sits flat. Please review the photos for further condition assessment.
Of particular interest is its association with Wallasey Golf Club, one of England's historic links clubs. Wallasey's connection to the great traditions of St Andrews reaches back to legendary Scottish golfer and course designer Old Tom Morris, the celebrated St Andrews figure who laid out the original Wallasey links in the 1890s. Wallasey would later become an important venue in British championship golf, hosting final qualifying for The Open Championship on numerous occasions. Most famously, Bobby Jones qualified at Wallasey in 1930 before winning The Open at nearby Royal Liverpool during the extraordinary season in which he completed his historic Grand Slam. A signed portrait of Jones remains among the historic treasures associated with the Wallasey clubhouse. The club also occupies a special place in golfing history as the "Home of Stableford." Dr. Frank Stableford, a Wallasey member, introduced his revolutionary scoring system there in 1932, forever changing recreational golf by rewarding points rather than simply counting every stroke.
With its hammered sterling surface, unusual triple-handle form, substantial weight, ebonized plinth, and connection to one of England's historic golf clubs, this is far more than a presentation cup. It is a striking piece of British sporting history and Arts & Crafts silver, ideally suited to a golf collection, traditional library, gentleman's study, clubhouse interior, or distinguished trophy display.
